What is a Wax Melt?
Wax melts are also know as candle melts, wax tarts or wickless candles, but what are they and how do you use them?
It’s all about the scent
Simply put wax melts are small pieces of scented wax. When warmed the was will melt and slowly release the fragrance into the air.
How do you use wax melts?
The easiest way is to use either an oil burner or an electric burner. If using the oil burner you place the wax melts into the recess or reservoir at the top and place a tea light into the open area below. For best results always use an unscented tea light. If you’re using an electric burner/warmer then follow the manufacturers instruction.
Are all wax melts equal?
Unfortunately not. There are different waxes, types of fragrances and fragrance strengths. Many mass produced wax melts also have low fragrance levels. That’s why those cheap melts from the supermarket never seem to last or give out much scent. Artisan handmade wax melts (such as ours) are more likely to have a better ‘scent throw’ into your home. The scent throw is how well the fragrance spreads away from the wax melt into your room.
What about colours and glitter?
Wax melts also come in different colours and some even have dried flowers embedded or glitter. This is purely decorative. The colours and glitter won’t add to the scent and may even detract from it. Dried flowers and dried fruit might adjust or change the scent but this would be minimal.
Of course this will increase the cost to make the wax melts so the retail price will also increase.
How many wax melts should I use?
This is a difficult question to answer as it depends upon a few different things.
- How strong would you like the scent to be? The stronger you’d like it the more wax melts you need to use. Although be careful that you don’t fill the oil burner so full the wax overflows
- How big is your room? The bigger the area more wax melts you will need to fill your room with scent.
- The size and shape of your oil burner. This will affect how hot the wax gets which, in turn, will affect how the fragrance burns off out of the wax into your room.
- The ingredients used and in what proportions. There are a variety of different waxes and types of fragrances that can be used to make wax melts. Some combinations will give a better scent throw than others.
- Don’t forget you can break large wax melts down into smaller piece to fit into the reservoir of your burner.
Wax melts are a fantastic way to scent your house and create that cosy feeling of home. Have fun trying out different scents and maybe even starting a little collection of different burners.
